Joseph J. Dovi, 59, of Briarmeadow Rd., Cortland passed away unexpectedly February 9, 2015. He was born February 25, 1955 in Cortland the son of the late Anthony and Mary Ellen Vormwald Dovi. Joe was a lifelong resident of Cortland graduating from Cortland High School in 1973. He attended SUNY Cortland then graduated from Syracuse University majoring in Music Performance. Joe began his professional career at Dovi Motors of Cortland, which was started by his father in 1949 as a Texaco gas station, then repair shop, and has been family owned for over sixty-five years. Joe was communicant of St. Mary’s Church and was an active member of the Cortland Rotary Noon Club since 1982 Joe was musically inspired by his father at an early age, and will be remembered as a lifelong musician. He started clarinet in grade school and played various instruments through graduation. He had a great passion for music and was Concert Master for Cortland High School, and a member of the SU Marching Band serving as Drum Major in 1977. Joe was a lifetime member of the Cortland Old Timer’s Band currently serving as concert master. When not working or enjoying music he could be found spending time with his family at Song Lake on his boat. Joe was devoted to his family who will miss him dearly. He is survived by his wife of 38 years Susan Schmidt Dovi of Cortland, his son Luke (Christina) Dovi and their children Ethan, Aiden, and Evelyn of Virgil, his daughters Sara (Ben) Mastronardi and their children Zoe, Bode, and Kylie of Manlius and Emma Dovi of Syracuse, his siblings and their families Patricia Dovi, Tony (Maureen) Dovi, Phil (Ellen) Dovi, Tom (Diane) Dovi, Charles (Andrea) Dovi, David (Terri) Dovi. Calling hours are Thursday 4-7 pm at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc., 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland NY A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Church, Cortland, with Fr. Joseph Zareski presiding. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Cemetery.
